Every once in a generation, a game comes along that reminds you why you fell in love with gaming in the first place. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 did exactly that for me. It instantly brought me back to the first time I played Final Fantasy VII and reminded me why story-driven RPGs continue to be my favorite genre. This isn't just one of the best RPGs in years. It's one of the best games I have ever played.

It's incredibly rare for a game to leave me speechless after the credits roll. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 accomplished exactly that.

From the very first trailer, I knew this game had something special. What I didn't expect was to experience one of the greatest RPGs I've ever played. This is one of those once-in-a-generation games that reminds you why you started playing video games in the first place.

As I played through Expedition 33, I couldn't stop thinking about the first time I experienced Final Fantasy VII. That same sense of wonder, emotional storytelling, unforgettable characters, and desire to keep pushing forward was there every single hour. It captures the magic that made classic JRPGs legendary while modernizing nearly every aspect of the experience.

The world itself is breathtaking. Inspired by France's Belle Époque era, every location feels like a living painting. The environments constantly left me stopping just to admire the scenery. Combined with an incredible soundtrack and outstanding art direction, Expedition 33 creates one of the most beautiful worlds I've ever explored.

Combat is where the game truly separates itself from the competition. It brilliantly combines strategic turn-based gameplay with real-time mechanics like dodging, parrying, and perfectly timed attacks. Every battle demands your attention and rewards mastery without ever becoming repetitive. The result is one of the most satisfying combat systems I've experienced in an RPG.

The story is exceptional.

Without spoiling anything, it's emotional, mature, surprising, and filled with moments that genuinely stayed with me long after I finished playing. Every member of Expedition 33 feels important, and watching their relationships develop throughout the adventure creates an emotional connection that's difficult to find in modern games. By the time the credits rolled, I wasn't just satisfied. I was genuinely moved.

One of the reasons this game deserves so much praise is the incredible story behind its creation.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was developed by Sandfall Interactive, a small French studio founded in 2020 by Guillaume Broche, who left Ubisoft to pursue his dream of creating the kind of story-driven RPGs he grew up loving. Alongside fellow former Ubisoft developers François Meurisse and Tom Guillermin, Broche assembled a passionate team that shared his vision. Inspired by classic Japanese RPGs like Final Fantasy, they set out to prove that a relatively small studio could create an RPG capable of standing alongside the industry's biggest names. Against all odds, they succeeded.

What's even more impressive is that this was Sandfall Interactive's debut game. While many AAA studios rely on hundreds of developers and enormous budgets, this passionate team built one of the highest-rated RPGs of the generation by focusing on creativity, storytelling, and heart instead of simply making a bigger game.

Every once in a while, a developer reminds the entire industry that passion still matters. Sandfall Interactive has done exactly that.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is proof that incredible games aren't defined by billion-dollar budgets or massive development teams. They're defined by passion, creativity, and a vision that's executed with confidence.

Sandfall Interactive left Ubisoft to chase a dream of creating the kind of RPGs they grew up loving, and somehow, they delivered one of the finest RPGs of the modern era. This is the type of game people will still be talking about ten or twenty years from now.

Very few games earn a perfect score from me.
