Frequently Asked Questions

New to Rank and Play? Here's what you need to know about ratings, reviews, forums, and how the community works. Click a question to expand its answer.

What is Rank and Play?
Rank and Play is a gamer-first community built around video game ratings, reviews, rankings, discussions, and discovery. Instead of reducing an entire game to one unexplained number, Rank and Play breaks ratings into the parts of a game that actually matter. You can see what players loved, what disappointed them, and exactly how a game's final score was earned. Beyond ratings, you can discover games, read reviews and gaming articles, join forum discussions, connect with other players, and build a gaming profile that reflects your taste.
What makes Rank and Play different from other game review sites?
Most gaming sites give you a score and ask you to trust it. Rank and Play is built to show you why a game received that score. Players rate games across seven separate categories, making it easier to see whether a game has incredible gameplay but a weak story, amazing graphics but little replay value, or delivers across the board. Rank and Play also puts the gaming community at the center of the experience instead of relying on a single publication, critic, or review score.
How does the rating system work?
Every Rank and Play rating is built from seven categories: gameplay, immersion, fun, story, graphics, sound, and replay value. Players score each category from 1 to 10, and those ratings combine to create the game's overall score. This gives you more context than a traditional single-number rating because you can see exactly where a game succeeds and where it falls short.
Who decides a game's Rank and Play score?
The gaming community does. Rank and Play is designed around player opinions rather than a single critic deciding the final verdict. As more players rate a game, the community score becomes a reflection of how the people actually playing it feel across all seven rating categories.
Is Rank and Play free to use?
Yes. Rank and Play is free to browse and join. You can explore games, check community ratings, read reviews and gaming articles, browse rankings, and explore forum discussions without paying to access the core experience.
Do I need an account to use Rank and Play?
No. You can browse games, view ratings, read reviews and blog posts, explore rankings, and check out forum discussions without creating an account. Creating an account unlocks the community side of Rank and Play, including rating games, participating in the forums, earning XP, leveling up, connecting with other gamers, and nominating games for the Hall of Fame or Hall of Shame. Publishing full game reviews requires your account to be upgraded to a Blogger account.
How old do I need to be to join?
You must be at least 18 years old to create an account or use interactive features on Rank and Play. Our Rules page contains the full platform guidelines and explains the standards we expect members of the community to follow.
How do I rate a game?
Find the game you want to rate by searching Rank and Play or browsing the Games section. Once you're signed in, you can score the game from 1 to 10 across gameplay, immersion, fun, story, graphics, sound, and replay value. You can also explain your rating so other players understand why you scored the game the way you did.
What's the difference between a review and a rating?
A rating is your personal score for a game across Rank and Play's seven categories: gameplay, immersion, fun, story, graphics, sound, and replay value. Eligible signed-in members can rate games and explain the reasoning behind their score. Reviews are different — they're full written pieces that let you go much deeper into a game, including what you loved, what disappointed you, and whether you think it's worth playing. To write and publish reviews on Rank and Play, your account must first be upgraded to a Blogger account.
Can anyone write reviews on Rank and Play?
Not automatically. Members can rate games, but publishing full reviews is reserved for users who have been upgraded to a Blogger account. Blogger access helps Rank and Play maintain a higher standard for published reviews while still giving the entire community the ability to rate games and share their opinions. If you're interested in becoming a Blogger and contributing reviews to Rank and Play, contact us about upgrading your account.
Can I disagree with the community score?
Absolutely. That's part of the point. Gaming is subjective, and two people can have completely different experiences with the same game. Your rating doesn't have to match the community average. Rank and Play is designed to make those differences visible and give players a place to explain and debate their opinions.
Can I discover new games on Rank and Play?
Yes. Rank and Play isn't only about rating games you've already played. You can browse and search the game library, explore community ratings and rankings, read player reviews, and use other gamers' opinions to help decide what deserves a spot in your backlog.
What are the Hall of Fame and Hall of Shame?
The Hall of Fame and Hall of Shame are community-driven rankings celebrating gaming's greatest achievements and most infamous disappointments. Signed-in members can nominate games for either list, and the community determines which titles rise through the rankings. The Hall of Fame is where legendary games earn recognition, while the Hall of Shame is reserved for the games players would rather forget.
What is XP and leveling, and what do I unlock?
XP is Rank and Play's progression system and rewards you for being an active member of the community. You can earn XP through eligible activities across the site, such as rating games, participating in forum discussions, interacting with the community, and more. As your XP increases, your account levels up and your profile reflects your progress. Higher levels can unlock additional perks and milestone rewards, including special rewards at levels 100, 200, and 300. For a complete breakdown of how XP works, how to earn it, level requirements, and what you can unlock, select "What is Leveling?" from the menu.
Can I connect with other gamers?
Yes. Rank and Play is meant to be a gaming community, not just a database of scores. User profiles and social features make it possible to discover other players, connect with people who share your taste in games, and interact with the community. Whether you agree on a 10/10 masterpiece or completely disagree about an overrated game, Rank and Play gives gamers a place to connect around the games they play.
What can I do in the forums?
The forums are where the Rank and Play community can talk about gaming beyond individual ratings and reviews. Discuss new releases, classics, gaming news, controversial opinions, recommendations, industry topics, upcoming games, or whatever else the community is debating. Just keep discussions within the platform rules and respect other members.
What kind of content is on the Rank and Play blog?
The Rank and Play blog goes beyond game reviews with articles about gaming news, industry trends, upcoming releases, rankings, opinions, guides, community topics, and other stories we think gamers will want to talk about. The goal isn't corporate press-release coverage — it's content created for people who actually enjoy gaming and the conversations surrounding it.
Can I become a Blogger on Rank and Play?
Yes. Rank and Play can upgrade eligible community members to Blogger accounts, giving them the ability to write and publish full game reviews and contribute content to the platform. If you're interested in becoming a Blogger, use the Contact page to reach out and tell us a little about yourself, the games you enjoy, and what you'd like to contribute.
Can I build my own gaming profile?
Yes. Your profile is your identity inside the Rank and Play community. Your activity, ratings, XP, level, and community participation help show other players what kind of gamer you are and which games you love — or absolutely can't stand. As you spend more time on Rank and Play, your profile becomes a reflection of your history and involvement in the community.
Are ratings and reviews supposed to be positive?
No. Rank and Play is built for honest opinions. If you think a critically acclaimed game is overrated, say it. If you love a game everyone else hates, defend it. Positive and negative opinions are both welcome as long as they're genuine and follow the community rules. The goal is honest discussion, not forcing everyone to agree.
Can I suggest a game that's missing?
Yes. If you can't find a game you think should be on Rank and Play, let us know through the Contact page. We're always looking to improve the game library and make it easier for players to find, rate, and discuss the games they care about.
Can I report inappropriate content or another user?
Yes. Rank and Play is built around open gaming discussion, but that doesn't mean anything goes. If you come across content or behavior that violates the platform rules, use the available reporting tools so it can be reviewed. You can also use the Contact page if you need additional help or believe something requires our attention.
How do I report a bug or contact Rank and Play?
Use the Contact page to reach out about bugs, account problems, incorrect game information, content concerns, Blogger access, feature suggestions, partnerships, sponsorships, or general feedback. Rank and Play is actively evolving, and feedback from the community helps shape what gets improved and built next. For information about acceptable behavior and content, check the Rules page.
Is Rank and Play finished?
Not even close. Rank and Play is being actively developed, with new features, improvements, games, community tools, and content being added over time. The long-term goal is to build a place where gamers can discover games, share honest opinions, compare detailed ratings, meet other players, write and discuss gaming content, and have the kinds of debates that make gaming communities fun in the first place.
